The Alto Sondoveni secondary school project is the result of 10 years of joint effort between various institutions and the Ashaninka community of Alto Sondoveni, in the Peruvian Amazon. Initially, there was only a primary school in provisional spaces. Given the need for secondary education, in 2014, the NGO “Creciendo,” the PATRICIA KHS foundation, and students from the University of Stuttgart built the first secondary infrastructure with 3 classrooms, a principal’s office, and a dining hall. In 2022, the project expanded to meet the high demand, adding 4 classrooms, sanitary facilities, dormitories, a kitchen, workshops, and rehabilitating the library.
Today, the school hosts 70 students and 7 teachers. The project stems from listening to the community’s needs and valuing the resources and unique landscape of the area. The 6 proposed pavilions open up to face the mountains, creating collective, educational, and complementary service spaces. Additionally, the construction system used in stage 1 is improved.
Currently, the Semillas team manages and develops the infrastructure’s support and maintenance alongside the community. A team led by teachers and students has been created, with whom a plan of action for the sustainable future of the school was designed.
