The “Sonomoro nursery school” project provides access to early childhood education to more than 70 children of the Nomatsigenga community. The building is located in the heart of the native community of Sonomoro and consists of two blocks. The block of administrative and multipurpose spaces is located in the northwestern part of the lot, facing the main road. It contains the teachers’ room, the kitchen, the multipurpose room and the restrooms. Then there’s the 3-classrooms block, which is on the east side of the lot. Between the two blocks stands the entrance and that’s where a circular path starts, leading to the classrooms. The exterior spaces, including fruit trees, recreational areas, the ancestral forest and an amphitheater, generate a green landscape.

Every classroom fronts into a private courtyard on one side and a common courtyard on the other. The multipurpose room is configured as a large structure that opens to the courtyard and to the amphitheater located south-west of the lot: the frame is made of reinforced concrete, the roofs of pyramidal wood, the partition walls are made of handmade clay bricks and the doors and windows of wood and polycarbonate. The concept of the project came out with a collaborative work with the community and aims to give value to the rainforest landscape and to provide educational spaces that represent local culture.
